vista upgrade not completing

I have a Qosmio f20-137 with 1 gb ram, 128 video and 80 gb drive. I have downloaded Vista yesterday and at the fith stage of the ugrade (completing the upgrade), it says that the upgrade can not be completed. Unfortunately, when if did reboot on xp, the onlyt thing I have on the scree is the desktop. No icons, no taskbar., no wireless, nothing basically. My screen savers are still working though. When I reboot in safe mode, I have a safe mode screen. Can ou help please??? Thanks. -- salik

I found some backup files on my computer (probably two weeks old). Unfortunately, it got worse. Now when I reboot the laptop, the only thing displayed on the screen is the microsoft logo whith no log on options. The hadr disk doesn't seem to be running. Could I get some help with this issue please?
